The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., known simply as The Hartford, is a United States-based investment and insurance company. The company was founded all the way back in 1810, making it one of America’s oldest insurance companies. Today, The Hartford has grown to become the 12th largest property and casualty insurance company in the United States. It’s also one of the country’s largest corporations, currently sitting at number 156 on the Fortune 500 list. We have covered  everything you need to with The Hartford Auto Insurance Review.

The Hartford History

The Hartford was founded in 1810 in Hartford, Connecticut by a group of merchants. The company was originally called the Hartford Fire Insurance Company. Over the years, The Hartford has covered some of America’s biggest peacetime tragedies. The company covered the fire that destroyed most of New York’s financial district in 1835. For example, the Chicago fire of 1871, and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, among other major American disasters.

After the New York financial district fire of 1835, The Hartford’s president, Eliphalet Terry, used his personal wealth to pay out all the company’s damage claims, allowing the company to stay afloat and survive to this day.

The company uses a male deer – a hart – as its official logo. Today, the company offers insurance and mutual funds across the country while employing over 16,400 people nationwide. The Hartford is also particularly popular with AARP members, as AARP members receive exclusive discounts and bonuses.

The Hartford Insurance Rankings

The Hartford tends to rate higher than other insurance companies in terms of customer service and claims satisfaction. According to most rankings and reviews, The Hartford provides good-value insurance claims while still exceeding expectations for claims and customer service. The latest J.D. Power rankings for The Hartford placed the company near the top of the list:

Insurance Shopping (Auto): Better than most

Auto Insurance Claims Satisfaction: About average

Home Insurance: About average

Property Claims: About average

The Hartford has also been awarded an “A+” or “Superior” rating by A.M. Best, which analyzes the financial strength of companies. This high rating shows that The Hartford should have no trouble covering its liabilities or paying out claims. Many other insurance companies have only received an “A” or “A-” rating, so The Hartford’s higher rating is significant.

What makes The Hartford Insurance unique?

The Hartford isn’t among the top ten largest insurance companies in the United States, but it distinguishes itself from the competition with other options, including:

Mobile App: The Hartford has a mobile app where you can log in, pay bills, track claims, view your policy, display your electronic insurance card, summon roadside assistance, start a claim, and contact local repair shops, among other features.

Insure Multiple Vehicles: The Hartford sells more than just car insurance. The company also sells RV, ATV, snowmobile, golf cart, classic car, and boat insurance, among other vehicle insurance products.

Multiple Insurance Products: The Hartford sells home insurance, umbrella insurance, flood insurance, and renter’s insurance, among other insurance policies, making it easy to bundle multiple insurance products together and save.

Comprehensive Home Insurance: The Hartford’s home insurance is particularly well-rated. The Hartford’s Home Advantage Package, for example, includes many popular features. There’s “new for old” protection that covers the actual cost of replacing your possessions (not their actual cash value), reimbursement for replacing locks, identity fraud expense coverage (up to $50,000), a disappearing property deductible, and a valuable items blanket, among other helpful policies.

Is The Hartford a good insurance company? Our Review

The Hartford tends to be one of the better-rated major car insurance companies in the United States. It scored better than most insurance companies in terms of value on the latest J.D. Power rankings. The Hartford is also in a strong financial position, scoring an A+ from A.M. Best.

The Hartford also offers unique car insurance policy options that you won’t find with many other providers, including lifetime renew-ability, RecoverCare, new car replacement, optional first accident forgiveness, and more. It’s also particularly popular with AARP members, which means The Hartford’s insurance pool consists largely of older adults with many years of safe driving history.

The Hartford is also a great option for those who need good home insurance and auto insurance bundled together, as The Hartford’s home and auto insurance policies are all well-rated. The Hartford has several unique home insurance options that provide comprehensive protection for your property. Those who take advantage of The Hartford’s Home Advantage or Home Advantage Plus packages, for example, will enjoy comprehensive protection for their property and possessions.
