The State of Maine follows the majority of states in using the tort system for auto insurance. In short, when an accident occurs, one of the drivers will be determined to be the party who caused the accident (they are at fault), and this driver and their insurance will be subject to lawsuits and claims for treatment costs and damages.
To ensure that all drivers are financially able to cover themselves in the event of a crash, state law requires that drivers purchase a minimum amount of coverage. There are four coverages required by law.
Bodily injury liability insurance covers the other driver’s (and any passengers or pedestrians) injury-related costs stemming from an accident where the policyholder is the at-fault party. For example: if Driver A causes a crash with Driver B, Driver A’s BIL insurance will cover medical treatment, rehabilitation, lost wages, funeral expenses, or other costs for Driver B and their passengers. Drivers in Maine must purchase a minimum coverage of $50,000 per person, per accident, and $100,000 for all parties in a single accident.
Property damage liability insurance covers the cost of repairs to any property that you damage in a crash where you are the at-fault party, including damage to other vehicles. The minimum amount of Property Damage Liability coverage one can have in Maine is $25,000.
Uninsured motorist bodily injury insurance acts much like the BIL insurance explained above, except in this case the policyholder and their passengers are protected when in a crash caused by a driver who has no insurance (or who is underinsured). For example, if Driver A causes an accident with Driver B and Driver A has no insurance, Driver B’s Uninsured Motorist BIL insurance will cover their own medical treatment and other injury costs.
Like BIL, state law requires that drivers have coverage of no less than $50,000 per person, per accident, and $100,000 for all parties in a single accident.
Finally, medical payments insurance covers the insurance policyholder and their passengers for injury treatment, rehabilitation, funeral, or other expenses related to a crash, regardless of who is at fault for the accident. Purchasing MP insurance prevents you from having to pay out of pocket for these costs if the other driver is unable to pay the entire amount of the claim. As the BIL minimums are quite high, the minimum amount of MP one must purchase is a more reasonable $2,000.

Maine Auto Insurance Rates
Average auto insurance rates in Maine are almost 40% lower than the national average, thanks in part to low crash and vehicle theft rates, which we’ll discuss in detail later in this article. Looking statewide, drivers in Maine can expect to pay about $1,050 for a year’s worth of auto insurance, which is about $90 per month and quite a bit lower than the national median auto insurance rate of $1,440.
Those in Maine’s major cities may end up paying a bit more or a bit less, depending on where they live. Residents of the largest city, Portland, pay an average of $1,048 for a year’s worth of auto insurance; those in Lewiston are looking at around $1,418.
Let’s take a closer look at the ZIP codes within the state to see how rates changed based on different areas.
There are a lot of factors that auto insurance companies take into consideration when determining your rates. Take a look at our overview here.
While many of these factors are simply based on your own driving record, two things that affect even the safest of drivers are age and gender. As with most states, males typically pay higher auto insurance rates than females.
Maine Auto Insurance Companies
Though the state boasts very cheap auto insurance rates overall, let’s take a look at how rates vary between some of the largest companies.
But which companies are the largest, holding the most market share percentage in the region?
Maine Driving Statistics
Maine’s Department of Transportation has put in a lot of work with state law enforcement officers and highway patrols to reduce the number of crashes in the state – and it seems to be working. In 2009, Maine saw a total of 28,692 crashes reported, with 159 fatalities. These numbers are well below the five-year adjusted averages of 31,784 crashes and 171 fatalities, respectively.
How well the DoT’s plan is working becomes clear when these numbers are compared to the 2007 totals of 33,077 crashes and 183 fatalities, which some believe was the “trigger” year that caused the state to start focusing on driver safety and reducing the number of vehicle accidents that occur. As long as these totals continue their downward trend, drivers will continue to see reductions in the cost of Maine auto insurance.
As one might expect, thanks to its friendly population and somewhat remote location in the corner of the country Maine has some of the lowest reported auto theft numbers in the nation. In 2009 just 1,021 vehicles were stolen, giving Maine a rate of 77.4 thefts per 100,000 citizens.
These numbers have continued a downward trend throughout the past decade, beginning with 2001’s total of 1,671 vehicle thefts and dropping every year since then. With drivers adopting anti-theft and vehicle tracking devices at greater rates and police officers keeping a watchful eye on things, Maine’s auto theft numbers are likely to continue their plummet.
As with the crash totals, continued downward pressure on the theft numbers will bring further reductions to Maine auto insurance premiums.
