How does Uber EATS auto insurance work? They’ll provide you coverage while delivering the order, but you’ll need a commercial policy to cover you. The cost of this ranges from $900 to $1,700 annually, which is worth it to have proper Uber EATS vehicle insurance.
While many industries have suffered throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the food delivery business is thriving. One of the biggest food delivery app is Uber EATS. If you wish to drive for them, you may be wondering about Uber EATS auto insurance.
If you’re driving during this pandemic, you’ll need to look into coronavirus auto insurance policy rates. You will be on the road far more than if you were using your automobile simply for personal reasons. Throughout this article, you’ll learn how to drive for Uber EATS, whether or not auto insurance for Uber EATS is required, and the answer to the question “Does Uber EATS raise your insurance?”
Uber EATS Auto Insurance Requirements
You may be asking, “Do I need special insurance to be a delivery driver?” According to Uber EAT’s own website, all of their drivers are required to show that they have comprehensive or third party property damage coverage.
In addition to proof of insurance, Uber EATS will also look to see that a driver is listed as an insured driver on the policy, even if they are driving another individual’s vehicle. Your vehicle can also be no older than 19 years, must be in good condition with no cosmetic damage or commercial branding, and must be able to pass a vehicle inspection.
Uber maintains a level of coverage on behalf of its driving partners. There is a commercial auto liability policy of $1 million per incident. However, this is only active from the time a driver accepts a delivery request to the time the delivery is complete. Hence, the policy does not apply for the whole time the driver is on the road.
Another caveat is that the driver must maintain comprehensive and collision coverage on their personal auto insurance policy.
If the driver has met this requirement, the Uber insurance will provide physical damage coverage for their vehicle up to its actual cash value, regardless of who is at fault for the accident. Keep in mind, a $1,000 deductible payment is required of the driver prior to this coverage applying.
As we mentioned before, the $1 million liability policy does not cover you the entire time you’re on the road. There is also a 50/100/25 commercial auto liability policy that is active between deliveries.
It’s far better to have your own coverage, as an Uber insurance essentially only protects Uber.
If you’re in an accident, your medical bills are going to be coming out of your pocket. Uber also has no underinsured/uninsured policies to help protect you. Additionally, if you’re driving in New York, these Uber coverages are not applicable.
Let’s take a look at the average rates for various policies, including comprehensive, collision, and commercial auto insurance coverages, in the table below.
Average Annual Auto Insurance Rates by Coverage TypeCoverage Types | Average Annual Rates |
---|---|
Comprehensive | $148 |
Collision | $323 |
Liability | $538 |
Commercial | $900-$1,700 |
Commercial insurance is necessary for using your vehicle for reasons outside of personal use. In essence, commercial coverage is the answer to the question, “Do you need special insurance coverage to use your automobile for work?”

Uber EATS Without Commercial Insurance
The more you drive, the more you’re going to need commercial coverage. If you’re delivering more frequently, particularly in densely populated areas, you are consistently subjected to potential risks on the road. If you plan on driving commercially and only buy a personal car insurance policy from your insurance company, they may drop you in the event that you get into an accident while driving for Uber EATS.
Driving without insurance is illegal.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, if you get caught driving without insurance, you will be subject to fines, having your vehicle impounded, and having your license suspended. If you get into an accident without insurance, you may potentially face jail time.
Overall, having Uber’s coverage will not be enough. Furthermore, there is no Uber EATS auto insurance claims department, so should you have a medical or bodily injury, you’ll need to go through your insurance provider.
